Axiom Design is a UK product design and manufacturing company based in Yorkshire, founded by Mark Halliwell. We design and manufacture our own products — entirely in-house, from our own workshop — using 3D printing, CAD development, and a production pipeline that takes a product from a sketch on paper to a retail-ready packaged item without ever leaving the building.

This first post is an introduction. Who we are, what we do, how we do it, and why we chose to do it this way. After this, we’ll be documenting the whole journey — the products, the process, the decisions, the lessons — right here on this blog.

What Axiom Design Actually Is

Axiom Design is a product company. Not a design agency. Not a print-on-demand service. Not a consultancy. A product company — one that identifies problems worth solving, designs products to solve them, and manufactures those products from its own workshop.

The name is deliberate. An axiom is a self-evident truth — a foundational principle that doesn’t need to be proven because it is simply, obviously correct. Our axiom is this: good design changes lives. Not in a grand, sweeping sense. In the everyday, practical sense of an object that works better than the alternative, lasts longer than it needs to, and is genuinely satisfying to use.

That standard — the standard of something genuinely satisfying to use — is the bar every Axiom Design product is measured against. It is not a marketing position. It is a manufacturing discipline.

The Workshop: One Space, Complete Capability

The Axiom Design workshop in Yorkshire is where everything happens. Design, prototyping, manufacturing, finishing, packaging production, and final assembly — all of it takes place here, under one roof, with direct oversight of every stage.

This is not a typical setup. Most product companies outsource the majority of their production. Axiom Design has deliberately built a workflow that keeps as much as possible in-house — not because outsourcing is wrong, but because direct control of the production process is the most reliable route to consistent quality.

The production pipeline runs across ten stages: idea on paper, CAD development, 3D printing, product finishing, packaging design, packaging printing, professional lamination, die cutting, vacuum forming with 3D-printed moulds, and final assembly. The only stage that leaves the workshop is lamination — sent to a specialist and returned for the next step.

The result is a product development and small-batch manufacturing operation that is, in practical terms, completely self-contained. From first sketch to retail-ready packaged product — entirely in Yorkshire.

The Equipment That Makes It Possible

The workshop is built around a complete in-house production capability. What matters isn’t the specific machines but the breadth of it: everything needed to take a product from digital model to finished, packaged item lives under one roof.

That includes production-grade 3D printing for manufacturing parts at speed and consistency; full 3D CAD for engineering every product and packaging component before anything is printed; professional-grade printing for retail-quality packaging card; precision die cutting to cut laminated packaging to exact specification; vacuum forming for clear packaging shells, using moulds designed and 3D printed in-house rather than expensive machined tooling; and a range of finishing equipment for spray coating, dip coating, and specialist surface treatments.

The point isn’t the kit itself — it’s that the entire pipeline is owned and operated in-house, which is what makes direct quality control and fast iteration possible.

How a Product Gets Made at Axiom Design

Every product follows the same journey. It starts with a problem — something that could work better, last longer, or simply be made more cleverly. From there, the process is structured and deliberate:

1. Identify the problem. What specifically isn’t working? Is it worth solving? Is there already a good solution?
2. Sketch on paper. Explore directions quickly and cheaply before committing to anything digital.
3. Build in CAD. Engineer the solution with precision — every dimension, tolerance, and feature specified.
4. Print the prototype. The first physical version, typically within hours of the CAD model being complete.
5. Test and iterate. Does it fit? Does it feel right? Does it survive? Repeat until it passes.
6. Design the packaging. The packaging is part of the product — it gets the same design attention.
7. Produce in small batches. Manufacturing in controlled quantities, with quality checked at every stage.
8. Validate in the market. The batch goes to market. Real feedback. Real data. Real decisions.

This process is not a shortcut to market. It is a disciplined route that catches problems early, keeps quality high, and ensures that by the time a product reaches a customer, it has earned its place.

Why We Do Everything In-House

The obvious question is: why build this much internal capability? Why not design the product and outsource everything else?

The answer comes down to quality and speed. When you control the manufacturing process directly, you catch problems at the source. When a print setting is wrong, you see it immediately and correct it. When a packaging colour is slightly off, you adjust the profile before the batch runs. When a prototype reveals a design issue, you’re back in CAD the same day.

Outsourcing each stage introduces distance — between the design intent and the manufactured result, between the quality standard and the quality delivered, between the problem identified and the correction made. For small-batch production, where every unit matters and speed of iteration is a competitive advantage, that distance is a cost Axiom Design has chosen not to pay.

There is also something more fundamental at work. Mark Halliwell built Axiom Design to make things he is genuinely proud of. Pride in the work is not compatible with indifference to the process. The in-house production setup exists because the alternative — handing off the work and hoping for the best — is simply not how Axiom Design operates.

Why UK Manufacturing Matters

Axiom Design manufactures in Yorkshire. This is not a marketing position — it is a deliberate, considered commitment made with full awareness of the alternatives.

UK manufacturing means shorter supply chains, faster iteration, and direct accountability for quality. It means the products Axiom Design makes are made in the same country they’re sold in, by the same person who designed them. It means that when something needs to change, it changes quickly — not after a three-week lead time from an overseas supplier.

It also means something harder to quantify but genuinely important: the knowledge that comes from making things yourself, in your own workshop, with your own hands, never leaves the business. Every print run teaches something. Every product iteration adds to the body of manufacturing knowledge that makes the next product better.

What Axiom Design Stands For

1. Quality Over Volume — We’d rather produce 100 exceptional products than 1,000 mediocre ones. Every time, without exception.
2. Honest Process — We document what actually happens: the iterations, the failures, the improvements. No polish, no spin.
3. Continuous Improvement — Every product, every print, every process: we’re always looking for the 1% improvement.
4. UK Manufacturing Pride — We’re British manufacturers and proud of it. Everything is designed and made in our Yorkshire workshop.

Year One: What We’re Building Towards

Year One at Axiom Design is about getting the foundations right. The products currently moving through the development pipeline will be the first test of everything the workshop is capable of — the design process, the manufacturing workflow, the packaging production, the market validation.

By the end of Year One, the goal is straightforward: a product range that works, sells, and earns the right to grow. A blog that is genuinely worth reading. And a manufacturing operation that has proved, through the work itself, that quality small-batch production from a single Yorkshire workshop is not only possible — it is a genuinely competitive position.

There are more products in development beyond the current range — ideas that scale in complexity, each one building on the capabilities established by the one before. Axiom Design is not a single-product company. It is a platform for a body of work that is, at this point, only just beginning.
